Long Beach Leaders are Readers: City Councilmember Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie

Dr. Joni Ricks‑Oddie serves on the Long Beach City Council representing the Ninth District. Elected in 2022, she chairs the Budget Oversight Committee and serves as Vice Chair of both the Government Operations & Efficiency Committee and the Housing Authority. She also sits on several additional city committees and represents Long Beach on regional bodies, including the Gateway Cities Council of Governments.

This Black History Month, Dr. Ricks-Oddie wants to highlight one of her favorite books to read with her kids, Ada Twist, Scientist. “This book celebrates curiosity, persistence, and the power of asking ‘Why?’ — all qualities that are essential in science, leadership, and community problem‑solving. Ada’s story shows young readers, especially girls and children of color, that their questions, ideas, and voices matter.”

Dr. Ricks-Oddie adds, “Representation in books is incredibly important, and seeing a young Black girl portrayed as a brilliant scientist helps expand what children believe is possible for themselves. This book inspires us to stay curious, embrace challenges, and never stop exploring the world around us.”

“The themes in Ada Twist, Scientist feel incredibly relevant today because they highlight the importance of curiosity, representation, and critical thinking. Ada’s constant drive to ask ‘why' mirrors the kind of inquisitive mindset that has shaped my own career in public health and data‑driven problem‑solving. Her story also reflects the need for children—especially girls and children of color—to see themselves as innovators, leaders, and scientists. In a society that depends on creativity and evidence‑based solutions, Ada’s journey encourages all of us to stay curious, challenge assumptions, and believe that our questions can lead to meaningful change.”
