What is Books Unbanned?

Inspired by the groundbreaking work of the Brooklyn Public Library and four other partner libraries — Boston, LA County, San Diego, and Seattle — Books Unbanned  ensures that teenagers have free, unrestricted digital access to thousands of books. This initiative enables young people to explore stories that resonate with their experiences, expand their understanding of the world, and engage with ideas that others have tried to suppress. Every young person deserves the right to read, learn, and grow.

Why is it important?

When books are banned, voices are silenced. Censorship disproportionately targets stories by and about marginalized communities — erasing essential narratives and limiting the freedom of thought and expression.

Books spark empathy. They connect us to others and foster understanding.
Books empower young people. They help teens navigate complex issues and find their own voice.
Books build strong communities. Access to diverse ideas strengthens our democracy.

Ready to read freely?

Know a teenager ages 13-19 living outside of Los Angeles County who wants to access more books? They can sign up for a  free Long Beach Public Library digital library card  to start exploring thousands of banned and challenged books online. Teens can also get free digital library cards from as many other Books Unbanned public library system partners as they want!

Anyone living in Los Angeles County is already eligible for an LA County Library card. Long Beach residents are also eligible for Long Beach Public Library cards.
