Censorship Is So 1984: Long Beach Leader and Vice Mayor Roberto Uranga’s Book Recommendation

Roberto Uranga is the Vice Mayor of Long Beach and has served as the 7th District Councilmember since 2014. He resides in the Wrigley Neighborhood, where he raised his family, with his wife (and former Councilmember), Tonia Reyes Uranga.

Vice Mayor Uranga is particularly fond of the book 1984 by George Orwell. “I first read 1984 as an assignment in an English literature class in college. The depiction of a totalitarian state at that time seemed fictional. But here we are. Current events lead me to believe that George Orwell's book was prophetic in many ways. Big Brother is flexing his muscles.”

“‘War is Peace' is the most paradoxical line I have ever read in a novel and initiated thinking that keeps me attuned to the language used by politicians: Doublespeak,” explains Uranga. “1984 is a portrayal of totalitarianism and authoritarianism. It portrays the manipulation of truth, much like what is happening today. In Doublespeak, ‘Ignorance is strength.'”

Book bans, anti-DEI sentiment, and growing government influence in every aspect of our lives are not only scary, but inhumane,” says Uranga. “This exercise of absolute power and the suppression of individual liberties should not succeed. We must resist Big Brother's efforts for total control.”
